adidas miCoach U.S.A. launch

It’s finally here. miCoach has launched in the U.S. and is on sale here for the first time. Get yours now! It’s been a long time coming after three years of working on this project. The screen below shows what the adidas.com USA home page looked like today. Just below that is the newly designed miCoach homepage to coincide with this launch and some new branding/campaign work. Awesome work everybody!

Also, some really nice words about our site design on the FAST COMPANY web site today. These words are music to my ears and illustrate that all of our hard work has really paid off in creating a rich yet easy to use experience. This is much, much harder than it sounds.

  • “The Web site, which was created by adidas along with Molecular, does not miss a step–it’s intuitive, fun to use, and keeps pace with almost everything a runner needs.”
  • “The Web interface coupled with these devices is often where they trip over their laces, but not in this instance. The miCoach site is easy to navigate, and includes just about everything you need in order to track and improve your running.”
  • “The Adidas miCoach Pacer is the most full-featured and enjoyable personal training device on the market.”

Flickr – Most Popular Cameras

picture-281

Thought this was a very interesting statistic even though it is not very surprising. The most popular camera on Flickr these days is being challenged by the simple photo abilities on the iPhone. I am sure it is a reflection of many things including mobility, and even audience type. It does in the end become the most versatile tool for capturing life’s moments and Flickr may be more popular now with casual photo enthusiasts and not serious hobbyists or pros.

Lot of other great information here as well. Check it out when you get a chance  -  http://www.flickr.com/cameras/

Offf 09 – Day 2

Robert L. Peters

This presenter started off his talk with a disclaimer. He said he was probably the only one there who would be using Power Point slides, and that he was probably old enough to be most of the attendees father. Regardless, his talk brought a lot of great and traditional ideas to the front. In particular, his thoughts as a sort of disciple of Marshall McLuhan reminded us all that there was something before the digital world and that it still has much to teach us.

I especial liked the Maxim for his company Circle Design Inc. Check out the site, there is also some great quotes from current and past figures that are both insightful and thought provoking.

Aaron Koblin

You may or may not know his name, but you have probably seen or heard of his work. Probably best known these days for his work on the British über alterna-rock band Radiohead’s video “House of Cards”. He used experimental laser cameras, processing coding language, and a custom 3d rendering engine to create not just the video, but also an open source library of all the code for group experimentation of interactive projects. As far as interactive designer rock-stars go, he is it.

Aaron is very much a proponent of “group-think” and “crowd sourcing” for design and development. He said something quite interesting which is that the actions of the group average out the failures (failure being a key theme this year), and in the end makes it a better project. Not new I guess. Its something that all open source communities count on. I think the special point here is that it can be used to develop very pure interactive experiences. Something perhaps beyond functionality, and touching on a pure human experience and art.

Check out Bicycle Built for 2,000. It is an interactive experience of over two thousand voices collected over the internet compiled and singing “Daisy Bell”. The end result is interesting, but even better is the ability to dig down into each note of the song to compare submissions.

And now for sometng completely different. Inspite the fact that these guys seem completely crazy, clients do pay them for work. Now I know who was responsible for the old Modernista site. Not really my cup-of-tea, but maybe some of you like this out there. This is a great example of a particular aesthetic completely overriding much if any that we usually associate with commercial interactive design. Also dissapointing for me was the lack of any focus on process or even philosophical basis for some of this work. I guess that might be the point. Not sure.

OFFF 09 Day 1

Hello again from Lisbon. Eventful day here for the opening of OFFF 09. In typical Portuguese fashion, it started late, but not to worry right? This years theme is “Fail Gracefully”, so all is well.

The day started out with a presentation from Neville Brody. A sort of sage of the graphic design world at this point. He spent much of his time pleading for and predicting a new age for design. Asking designers to once again be provocateurs, destroyers and re-creators of culture. In essence to “make trouble”. I like it! Interesting point of view. The current economic crisis does present us with a new age perhaps. One in which our priorities shift. Maybe he is right. He has a pretty good track record anyway.

He focused quite a bit unsurprisingly on typography. His point was that it is indeed language, but just as important a “visual language”. Also, the idea that language is a contract between people. We agree to certain standards, and then apply them in order to communicate. The fun pat comes when we try to bend and break those rules. How far can we go and still communicate effectively? How far do we have to go to actually create something new and fresh?

Multitouch Barcelona – These guys showed of some of their recent work. They even have a large Space Invaders interactive game here on a large screen. They talked quite a bit about making technology human. A theme we should all pay more attention to. When we claim to be user centered designers, what does that really mean? Are we appealing to the very human elements of fun, delight, surprise, and creation? Check out the demo here and above. I think you will agree they have kinda nailed it.

Do yourself a favor and check out the work on UVA’s website. Not the traditional interactive agency, but something quite apart from the rest. Yes they do some corporate work, but only to pay the bills so they can create amazing experiences for music videos, concerts and events. They don’t stop at designing either, they write and build their own tools in order to accomplish the things they dream up. One in particular was really impressive. The result is shown in some screens below. Its the result of a 3d animation engine that creates real time HD video in sync with a 10 minute Massive Attach song. My guess is that it wans’nt done on a couple laptops :)

Again this year, the thing that strikes me the most is the passion with which people talk and share their work. Also, there is almost never talk about who is a designer, and who is a coder. The line is really blurred. The result of this is pretty self-evident. Great stuff!
