Hi Ricardo,
I'm planning on making a full post about this soon, but here's the brief view: It depends on what you're trying to build.
As far as enterprise level web applications, Dojo and OpenLaszlo will aid in constructing widgets and full browser dashboard type functionality.

The other ajax frameworks that have good developer communities are Prototype, MooTools, YUI, and jQuery. All are good and have their own advantages and disadvatages... but...

If you're looking for a more nimble and agile framework, I recommend jQuery. It's incredibly quick for developers to turn designers' ideas into reality and it will keep your code lean and readable.

Ricardo,

I'm a big fan of JQuery, although I personally haven't used it on projects. Previously, I've used prototype/scriptaculous, and I liked them. Both of those sets have nice, smooth animations, and much small download sizes for the client, which makes them "feel" better. Mootools is another one I've looked at and like, but that project is pretty stale, so I can't recommend it.

My suggestion is that you explore a bunch of them, evaluate how active they are, how big the community is, and if the development methodology "makes sense" to you and your application.

Excelent post, thanks for all the descriptions provided, as I was precisely looking into ACT as an alternative to provide a fast ad reliable framewok for Web Development to perform upgrades to our site...

Given the conclusions you mentioned above, could you also share your findings with respect to alterative AJAX framework(s) that fit the bill with respect to speed, reliability and usuability? I'm asking this as I imagine you've already done a good amount of work on it...

Thanks,
